Body Mass Index Calculator
Body Mass Index, or BMI is a standardised way of assessing your weight. A BMI of between 18.5 to 25 is considered to be an ideal weight range, whilst a BMI outside of this range has health risks attached. The higher your BMI over 25, the higher your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.
BMI only works when someone has an average amount of muscle mass. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a highly trained athlete with a high muscle mass will appear overweight in terms of their BMI. Too little muscle mass (as in the elderly and malnourished) will make a person appear in the healthy range when in fact, they may have health issues.
Body mass index should not be used for children without further followup by a qualified medical practitioner.
